Thailand submitted the nomination dossier "Chiang Mai, the Capital of Lanna" to UNESCO by the January 2026 deadline. A final decision is expected in November. In between, the city undergoes one of the most important steps in the evaluation process: a physical inspection by ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, which advises UNESCO on whether nominated properties meet the criteria for inscription.
